The Quadriciser® is a piece of equipment currently utilized in the Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Clinic at Hines Veterans Hospital. As a Registered Kinesiotherapist, (RKT) I facilitate general conditioning programs to spinal cord populations in an effort to upgrade and or maintain functional independence. My primary use of the Quadriciser® is with quadriplegic patients most often exhibiting limited strength and range of motion.
The Quadriciser® allows the therapist to roll the patient's wheelchair underneath the upper extremity range of motion pulley. Hand mitts can be utilized with patients that have limited or poor grip strength. The lower extremities are lifted into a boot. Each boot is attached to a lower extremity pulley system. The speed and direction of movement, as well as, upper extremity range, is then set. Both can be adjusted to the individual patient. With the flip of a switch, range of motion to both upper and lower extremities is provided within the time specified on the unit.
The Quadriciser® frees up the therapist while enabling the patient to receive range of motion, throughout all extremities. Many of the spinal cord patients who have utilized the Quadriciser® feel it helps relax muscles while providing range of motion. The Quadriciser® has been used at the Hines Veterans Hospital for over 9-1/2 years. It is often utilized several times daily and has required very little maintenance.
